Joseph McCarthy & Veronica Lake Farmhouse
The McCarthy Farmhouse is a 3400 square foot historic celebrity home. Purchased in 1933 by Joseph McCarthy, Hall of Fame lyricist and founder of ASCAP, he used it as a summer home for his family and friends from Broadway to vacation in the summer. The famous Florenz Ziegfeld, silent actress Billie Burke and the dancing Ziegfeld Girls were frequent guests. His son Joseph A McCarthy also a lyricist, wrote “Ramblin’ Rose” for Frank Sinatra, inherited the farm and married the legendary Hollywood silver screen movie star Veronica Lake. They summered during the 1950’s entertaining their friends such as Debbie Reynolds, Marlon Brando, Alan Ladd, Perry Como, Nat King Cole, Mickey Rooney and Bobby Fisher the international chess king.
The Farmhouse sits up on the hill greeting you as you drive in with a massive wraparound sun porch with wicker furniture and enclosed views of the farmland, the Veronica Lake Studios and Movie Barns and sunsets over Jeffers Mountain. Greeting you off the sunporch is a den, entertainment room and living room with couches sitting around a grand old stone fireplace. The living room takes you into the dining room which flows into the full kitchen. The kitchen is complete with a dishwasher, stove, microwave, refrigerator and ends with the mud room washer and dryer. The den boasts a TV and sofa bed with views of the hot tub, deck, BBQ, picnic table, outside shower and campfire ring. The “speakeasy” entertainment room has a restored green Naugahyde bar and stools, a couple of relaxing tables with chairs and a Bluetooth speaker for your music.
Upstairs you will find Veronica’s Suite with a queen bed, sitting area and ample closet space. A full bathroom and a second bedroom known as the library with a queen are adjacent to Veronica’s Suite. Walking down the hallway is a third bedroom with a queen and an enclosed porch with a sofa bed. A small bedroom with a single, a second full bathroom and fifth bedroom with a queen bed overlooking the gated celebrity entrance. A private hallway leads to a linen room and Joseph’s Suite with a canopy king bed and a second enclosed porch, sofa bed and rear egress to Veronica’s stone root cellar.
